My dream is a condo with no yard
Oct. 21st, 2009 11:03 pmI weeded the front flowerbox today. On the one hand, I hate outdoor physical activity. On the other hand, it amuses me greatly that when I garden outside, I blast NPR on the boombox. I feel most amused because the next door neighbors have a habit of driving up to the house blasting music, a noxious and dangerous habit.
What I cannot stand, however, is all of the life in the ground. The flowerbox had a tree in it that we cut down because it died. There are giant mushroom caps growing off the treestump, which I am absolutely not going to touch. (Mushrooms are mushy and wet and disgusting.) Also, I put my hand down on three different slugs, trying to reach further into the box. Luckily, I didn't squish any slug guts onto my hand, but I most certainly did pick them up on my digging tool and fling them far, far from me. Last and worst, an ant traveled into the house with me. I don't normally have problems with ants, but I am nauseated by tiny things crawling on me. It makes me want to scream and jump around until it comes off.
The plants I'm ripping up were okay though. Ridiculous amounts of wild garlic, pretty much a forest of it. I asked my dad if we should keep it and eat it, but he pointed out that we have no real idea what sort of chemicals are getting sprayed around the neighborhood, and there are a few feral cats and several outdoor cats around.
What I should have asked, and failed to think of until just now, is what assurance I had that his tomatoes and peppers and the other things he grows around the house are any less contaminated. :)
